Bulky Waste: Sofas, Furniture & Appliances
Large items do not fit the bin — and most of them can be reused or taken apart for valuable materials.
Bulky waste means items too big for the regular collection: sofas, mattresses, tables, and white goods like fridges and washing machines. Left on the curb, they become eyesores and hazards; handled well, they are a resource.
Best First Step: Reuse
- Sell or give away usable furniture through second-hand platforms.
- Donate to charities that refurbish and redistribute.
- Offer free on community boards before sending anything away.
Then Recover Materials
Appliances contain steel, copper, and sometimes refrigerants that must be recovered by trained handlers — never smashed open. Mattresses can be recycled into steel and foam; wood furniture becomes chipboard feedstock.
How to Arrange Collection
Most cities run booked bulky-waste pickups or drop-off points. Separate metals, electronics, and upholstery where asked, and keep fridges upright so refrigerant does not leak.
