Deposit-Return Schemes: Bottle Bills That Work
Add a small refundable deposit to a bottle or can, and return rates climb past 90%. It is one of the most proven recycling tools there is.
A deposit-return system (DRS) charges a few cents when you buy a drink and refunds it when you return the empty container to a collection point or reverse vending machine. The deposit turns the bottle into something worth bringing back.
Why It Works
- High purity β containers are returned clean, not mixed with other rubbish.
- High rates β well-run schemes recover 90%+ of bottles and cans.
- Less litter β a refundable item is rarely dropped on the street.
What Gets Collected
Most schemes cover plastic bottles, glass bottles, metal cans and sometimes cartons. The material goes straight back to makers, cutting the need for new plastic and virgin metal.
Pair It With Sorting
A DRS handles drink containers best; everything else still belongs in your normal sorting bins. Together they keep far more material in the loop than curbside collection alone.
