Plastic Bans & Single-Use Policy
Bans on single-use plastic are spreading worldwide. They work best when paired with reuse options and better product design.
Single-use plastics β bags, straws, cutlery, foam boxes β are cheap, short-lived and easily littered. Many governments now restrict or ban the worst offenders to cut pollution at the source.
What Gets Banned
- Lightweight carrier bags (often a fee first, then a ban).
- Straws, stirrers and cutlery made of plastic.
- Expanded polystyrene food and drink containers.
- Oxo-degradable plastics, which just break into microplastics.
What Makes Them Work
A ban alone pushes people to alternatives β so there must be reusable or compostable options ready. Combined with producer responsibility and eco-design, bans shift the whole system toward less waste.
