Tire Recycling: From Old Rubber to New Use
A dumped tire never goes away quietly. Recovering it as rubber, energy or fuel keeps a real hazard out of the environment.
Every vehicle eventually sheds its tires. Because rubber is durable and bulky, stockpiles of worn tires are a long-term problem β they trap water (breeding mosquitoes), burn fiercely if set alight, and leach chemicals.
How Tires Are Recovered
- Shredding into crumb rubber for playground and sports surfaces.
- Construction β rubberized asphalt, noise barriers, mats.
- Energy β whole or chipped tires fuel cement kilns and power plants as a coal substitute.
- Retreading β a worn casing gets a new tread, the greenest option of all.
Why Sort Them Out
Tires do not belong in household bins or landfills. Take them to a tire dealer or collection point so they enter a recovery stream instead of a stockpile.
